How do we build deep bonds with our kids?
Is it by playing with them at the park? Taking them to their favorite restaurant? Buying them their favorite toy?
While it's good to be aware of our kids' love languages, the research shows that the #1 way to build deep bonds with our kids is by helping them process their emotions in difficult situations.
In this episode the men in our Fraternity discuss the importance of building deep bonds as fathers, and reflect on the do's and don'ts of helping our kids label their emotions.
We also look at the analogy of "the sprinkler" i.e. times when our kids are surprised by negative circumstances, and are overwhelmed by emotion.
You will learn about the 3 phases that our child's brain goes through during and after the sprinkler, and how to tactfully be a calming presence, allow them to cool off, and then provide logical feedback to help them process and grow. Doing so will create deep emotional bonds that will elevate our relationships with our kids for years to come!

What kind of goals do you set?
What question are most people trying to answer when they set a goal? What am I trying to achieve?
But is this the right - or most important - question to ask?
What if we reframed goal setting with the question: Who am I trying to become?
In this episode Phil & Ryan look at an Uncommon but effective approach to goal setting that focuses on 2 main aspects:
Creating SMART goals
Creating identity-based goals
By aligning our goals with our core values and attaching them to a greater vision of who we aspire to become, we can guard against feelings of burn out and let down, and ensure that we stay motivated for long term success and transformation.

Ever wonder why sometimes you feel inexplicably happy - while other times you're bummed?
Part of the answer lies in the chemicals produced in our bodies, particularly the chemicals affectionately known as the "happy hormones."
Chemicals like dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and cortisol each have their own role in producing both short and long term happiness in our lives - as well as the lives of those around us. These chemicals affect our minds, our moods and our bodies. And there are a whole host of factors & situations that impact the production of these chemicals, including our diet, sleep, laugher, stress, pleasure, quality time with loved ones, and more!
Understanding how these chemicals are produced, as well as their impact on our happiness, can empower us to consciously do things to produce good chemicals and avoid bad chemicals.
This power will directly impact every area of our lives, including the deep bonds of meaningful relationships, our overall health & well being, our work performance, our decisions, and the vision we cast for our lives!
If you've ever seen the movie Inside Out, just think of it as taking back the control panel from your emotions- you're in the driver's seat!

What can your life look like after participating in our Elevate Experience?
We sit down for a conversation with Tom & Chris - 2 of the participants in our MN Elevate Experience - to hear about the growth they've experienced since our weekend retreat.
We've all experienced some version of the "summer camp high": you go to a weekend retreat, meet some awesome people, hear some inspirational speeches, and set some loft goals... only to return home to your routine and grind and forget all about the vision you were so excited about.
Well, that's common
But because we're UNCOMMON, we not only provide amazing experiences, we also offer a community for you to continue to learn, implement and be held accountable to achieving your Uncommon vision for your life! And Tom and Chris are perfect examples of 2 men who've continued showing up, putting in the work, and adding a ton of value to our community. As you listen to their stories, don't you dare think, "Well that's fine & good for them, but I could never do that..." - hogwash!
You can start on your own Uncommon journey today by getting off the sideline and into the game by signing up to join our community using the link below!

How can emotional intelligence help us elevate our marriages?
When we understand that there are different chemicals at play in our own - as well as our spouse's - body and emotions, then we can begin the work towards producing the positive chemicals, and limiting the negative (harmful) chemicals.
Did you know that there are some simple skills we can learn & practice that will actually decrease cortisol aka the "stress hormone," and increase oxytocin aka the "bonding chemical"?
Skills like emotional labeling, active listening or mirroring, and resisting avoidance of tough subjects can each help us to increase oxytocin in our wives as well as ourselves, thereby deepening our bond of intimacy and trust.
And fear not - if you struggle in this area (and who of us does not?), these skills can be learned; but it does take time and commitment! It's important to remember that we're playing the long game here. Our efforts won't often result in the instant gratification we experience from dopamine hits, but even better - we will build a strong foundation that deepens over time and helps us to create and sustain a truly Uncommon marriage!

When did you know that you became a man?
This is a question that most men can't answer.
And this question - and its answer - highlight an important need for young men in our society. A need to understand what makes a true man, and how they can begin their transition from boyhood to manhood.
In this episode, Ryan interviews Phil and his eldest son Beckham, following Beckham's 13th birthday and the Rite of Passage weekend that Phil organized for him.
In this episode you will learn about some of the history of the rite of passage (ROP), including some of the more bizarre practices of various cultures around the world.
Phil and Beckham will share about their weekend ROP, including how Phil planned it, who he invited, and what intentional activities and discussions they had with Beckham as they acknowledged his transition into manhood.
Dads: know that you too can organize an unforgettable ROP for you son. There are great resources available, including the book Phil used, Milestones to Manhood. We also plan to offer and lead Rite of Passage retreats through Thee Uncommon in the near future -so stay tuned for that!

How do the questions you ask yourself shape the person you're becoming?
Tony Robins famously said that, The quality of your life is a direct reflection of the quality of questions you are asking yourself
If we aspire to lead Uncommon lives, then we oughta be asking ourselves Uncommon questions!
In this episode, Phil and Ryan share their own Top 10 list of questions they believe can help to create an Uncommon life. While this is certainly not an exhaustive list, we hope that these questions will inspire you to think critically about your decisions and dreams, and empower you to walk your own Uncommon path:
Who is Jesus to me?
What are my core values?
Where am I currently placing my identity?
How am I doing in loving and serving the people in my life (it's best to ask them)?
When was the last time I was truly excited about something?
What fears or insecurities are currently hindering my growth or success?
When was the last time I served someone and it cost me greatly?
When was the last thing I persevered through something difficult?
What legacy am I creating with my life?
What do I want my loved ones to say about me when I am gone?
