How can emotional intelligence help us elevate our marriages?
When we understand that there are different chemicals at play in our own - as well as our spouse's - body and emotions, then we can begin the work towards producing the positive chemicals, and limiting the negative (harmful) chemicals.
Did you know that there are some simple skills we can learn & practice that will actually decrease cortisol aka the "stress hormone," and increase oxytocin aka the "bonding chemical"?
Skills like emotional labeling, active listening or mirroring, and resisting avoidance of tough subjects can each help us to increase oxytocin in our wives as well as ourselves, thereby deepening our bond of intimacy and trust.
And fear not - if you struggle in this area (and who of us does not?), these skills can be learned; but it does take time and commitment! It's important to remember that we're playing the long game here. Our efforts won't often result in the instant gratification we experience from dopamine hits, but even better - we will build a strong foundation that deepens over time and helps us to create and sustain a truly Uncommon marriage!

When did you know that you became a man?
This is a question that most men can't answer.
And this question - and its answer - highlight an important need for young men in our society. A need to understand what makes a true man, and how they can begin their transition from boyhood to manhood.
In this episode, Ryan interviews Phil and his eldest son Beckham, following Beckham's 13th birthday and the Rite of Passage weekend that Phil organized for him.
In this episode you will learn about some of the history of the rite of passage (ROP), including some of the more bizarre practices of various cultures around the world.
Phil and Beckham will share about their weekend ROP, including how Phil planned it, who he invited, and what intentional activities and discussions they had with Beckham as they acknowledged his transition into manhood.
Dads: know that you too can organize an unforgettable ROP for you son. There are great resources available, including the book Phil used, Milestones to Manhood. We also plan to offer and lead Rite of Passage retreats through Thee Uncommon in the near future -so stay tuned for that!

How do the questions you ask yourself shape the person you're becoming?
Tony Robins famously said that, The quality of your life is a direct reflection of the quality of questions you are asking yourself
If we aspire to lead Uncommon lives, then we oughta be asking ourselves Uncommon questions!
In this episode, Phil and Ryan share their own Top 10 list of questions they believe can help to create an Uncommon life. While this is certainly not an exhaustive list, we hope that these questions will inspire you to think critically about your decisions and dreams, and empower you to walk your own Uncommon path:
Who is Jesus to me?
What are my core values?
Where am I currently placing my identity?
How am I doing in loving and serving the people in my life (it's best to ask them)?
When was the last time I was truly excited about something?
What fears or insecurities are currently hindering my growth or success?
When was the last time I served someone and it cost me greatly?
When was the last thing I persevered through something difficult?
What legacy am I creating with my life?
What do I want my loved ones to say about me when I am gone?

What is Family Discipleship?
We can define "discipleship" as making followers Jesus.
So a definition of family discipleship might be, creating intentional time built into the rhythms of the family’s life for the purpose of thinking about, talking about and living out the gospel.
As men - husbands and fathers - what is our role in family discipleship? Who's primarily responsible for discipling our kids?
Their pastor or youth group leader(s)?
Their teacher (if they attend a Christian school)
Their peer group?
Or, are we as fathers primarily responsible for discipling our kids? And if so, what does it look like for us to create a family discipleship plan? As always, we need to look to God's word for clarity and wisdom:
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” ‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭6‬:‭4‬ ‭NIV‬‬
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” ‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭6‬:‭6‬-‭9‬ ‭NIV‬‬
Charles Spurgeon asked the question, “ How can we hope to see the kingdom of our Lord advance when his own disciples do not teach his gospel to their own sons and daughters?”
As fathers, we can be sure that we are leading our family spiritually. The question is: are we leading them towards Christ through righteous obedience, or away from Christ through disobedience and apathy?
Make no mistake: this is NOT an easy calling. But it is a worthwhile calling; and one we can perform faithfully by God's grace!
In this part 1 episode we talk about family discipleship, the challenges and merits, and tangible ways we can start to implement a plan to ensure consistency.

What does it mean to start with the end in mind?
We believe in the power of visualization: imagining and picturing your desired outcome as a means of achieving your greatest goals. And what better goal than to live a life of purpose and impact?
In this episode, Phil & Ryan discuss the power of writing your own eulogy, or the story that will be shared about you at your funeral. While funerals are somber occasions, this is not intended to be a morbid exercise; but rather an opportunity to reflect on the life you want to create, and the person you want to become.
It's a powerful question to consider: "What will my loved ones say about me when I'm gone?" What do I want them to say?" And what kind person do I want them to remember?
We share our own eulogies, and encourage you to step up to the plate and write your own eulogy.
You can download our PDF that walks you through writing your own eulogy here: file:///Users/Ryan/Downloads/write_your_eulogy_fillable%20(1).pdf

As husbands, what does it look like to lead our wives spiritually?
How do we rightly think about submission in our marriage? What does it practically look like for us to love and lead our wives "as Christ loved the church," and to practice servant leadership?
That's what we unpack on this community call. We look at some of the challenges we face as husbands to lead our wives in our faith, as well as practical action we can take to fulfill this calling.
No matter where you're at in this journey, know that God has equipped you with all the knowledge and ability to be obedient in this area. Even prioritizing consistent prayer with your wife can go a long way in creating spiritual unity and intimacy in your marriage.
