How to be an Uncommon Leader

Wednesday Nov 15, 2023

Wednesday Nov 15, 2023

How do you define leadership?
What are the characteristics of a truly Uncommon leader?
Are leaders born, made, or a bit of both?
In this episode, Phillip & Ryan discuss these questions and more in their desire to portray what an Uncommon leaders should look and act like.
Qualities like humility, integrity, ownership, selflessness, empathy and a servant's heart - all of these comprise Uncommon leadership.
We look at how Jesus modeled leadership - and how his "upside down" approach contrasts with the all too common selfish, domineering, and outright oppressive leadership exercised in our world today.
Uncommon leaders are servants; and to be a servant, one must walk in humility and love towards those they lead.
We also talk about ways to invest in yourself and grow as a leader. Yes, while many individuals are born with innate abilities that lend themselves to leadership, leadership can also be developed over time through intentional effort. Like a muscle, when leadership is consistently exercised it will grow stronger. And if left dormant it will atrophy over time.
We also discuss the importance of personal brokenness in becoming qualified for leadership, as well as the importance of Uncommon Communion with God to sustain our leadership for His glory.
The fact is that everyone is a leader to some extent. Regardless of whether you have 1 million loyal followers, or zero people following you - leadership starts with self-leadership.
How are you leading yourself daily to grown and improve as a man or woman. How are you investing in your knowledge and skills? In what ways are you improving your health & fitness, your relationships, your stewardship, faith and overall life vision?
Don't strive to gain followers. Just strive to be the best version of your Uncommon self you can be, and you will attract others who want to benefit from your leadership!

Have you ever felt the urge to redeem yourself by conquering something that once conquered you?
While the word retribution may sound like a Liam Neeson movie (*hint: it is), this was Phillip's mentality as he prepared to face off against the RAGNAR again: to completely dominate the race that left him hobbled the year prior.
In this episode he recounts his 2nd go at the team relay race, his mentality and the type of teammate he was. He tells us about his teammates and the different dynamics of running 15 miles over the course of 2 days.
He also shares about how completing RAGNAR twice has expanded his view of what he previously thought we was physically & mentally capable of. In our Uncommon journeys we promote the practice of setting and working towards identity-based goals (as opposed to merely outcome based goals).
What type of person am I trying to become?
This question can reframe the goals we set and work towards, empowering us to achieve our goals while continuing on the path of growth and improvement.

When did you last take time to purposefully reflect on God's faithfulness to you over your life?
Why is reflecting on God's faithfulness important?
Doing so will actually bolster our own faith in Him, as we recount His blessings and sustaining presence in our lives. Gratitude will help us fix our eyes on what is there, instead of what isn't. When we focus on the ways in which God has blessed us, this thankfulness will produce in us an abiding joy that the world can't touch.
In today's episode, I sit down with John Ottley, who is a shining example of a man who regularly reflects on God's faithfulness to him over 67 years of life. John share how he came to faith in Jesus as a young man living in a broken home. He remembers the men and women who invested in his faith, and modeled a Christian walk.
John also shares how his faith in Christ has helped him to faithfully work for and enjoy a marriage of 44 years to his wife Kathleen. And he also talks about how God has empowered him to be a faithful and present father and grandfather.
John shares about his work as a chaplain in corporate America, and the importance of cultivating listening skills and kindness as we interact with lost people in need of a saving relationship with Christ.
Finally, John opens up about the vision he seeks to cast for himself and his family; a vision of abundant love and satisfaction in God's presence.
Be inspired and encouraged to take time to reflect on God's faithfulness in your own life. Take time to journal, pray and thank God for His unfailing love. And if you don't know God, ask Him to reveal Himself - He is faithful to respond to all who call on him with a heart of desire!

What does your community look like?
Do you think of community as your immediate family, co-workers, church members, or that small close-knit group of high school buddies you still keep in touch with?
Better question: What are you willing to do to ensure that you have authentic community?
Are you willing to go somewhere new, try a different experience, put yourself out there and make that initial intro?
And if you are a Christ follower, what community do you have around you to spur you on in love and good deeds?
In this episode, Ryan reflects on the 1st ever Men's Retreat at his church. Over 60 men chose to sacrifice their comfort and weekend plans - as well as time with their families - to show up and pursue spiritual growth and a deeper walk of faith.
They played fun games and competed, they heard truth from God's word, they worshipped together, and they got real as they discussed various topics of biblical manhood and prayed together.
The men showed up. And God showed out!
Our challenge to you is to get into community. Make the investment not only in yourself, but in the lives of others. And if there's no community around you... Start it yourself!

How do you define your calling in life?
Is your calling comprised of what you do in their 9-5?
Does calling consist of the roles we play as spouses, parents, friends, employees?
Or do we each inherently possess a singular purpose with which God has created and intended us for in this life?
And how do you know if/when you're actually walking in your calling?
These questions, and many more, are what my guest, Shiraz Siddique, seeks to answer in his book, Well Done: A Passionate Pursuit of Purpose.
As a media host, author, ministry leader, and serial entrepreneur, Shiraz works to empower Christians to break out of neutral, lukewarm living so they can reach the finish lines God has laid out for them. With his business and pastoral background, Shiraz's personal story is motivating and inspiring to all who seek to discover and thrive within their own personal callings.
When your time on the planet expires, the sum of your decisions will answer the universal question: what is my purpose? Well Done was written to provide the necessary clarity to discover and recover the greatness that is silently stirring in your God-given DNA. Don’t ignore the pebble in your shoe – if you sense there is more to your existence than coasting through an average life, Well Done could be the very spark to send you in the direction of your dreams and destiny!Available at: www.WellDoneBook.info or https://amzn.to/3B42mG7

Why should you & your spouse prioritize dating in your marriage?
If you've been married for more than a year, you've likely learned that infatuation is a phase, and it takes intentionality to maintain the passion and excitement in marriage. As we settle into our routines of married life, it's easy to unconsciously start to "drift" away from pursuing romance, fun and intimacy.
So we need to have regular rhythms of dating!
In this episode I am joined agin by my wonderful wife Victoria to reflect together on our imperfect - yet intentional - approach to dating each other over the past 5 years of marriage. We talk about the weekly and monthly dates and touch points we've prioritized, and how they've helped us create deeper emotional & physical intimacy and excitement in our marriage.
We also reflect on the relationship of dating and parenting, and how prioritizing our marriage connection has empowered us to show up better as parents to our boys.
Ultimately, dating is a great way to guard against the drift and enable you to continue to learn about your spouse as you build your foundation of friendship!

How do you keep your marriage, fun, fresh, and Christ-centered?
In this episode, I sit down with my 1-and-only beautiful wifey, Victoria, as we reflect on the last 5 years of our marriage: the good, the bad, and everything in between.
We share the lessons we've learned (and are still learning), the mistakes we've made (and how we've grown), and our approach to prioritizing quality time together, and casting Victorious Vision.
Marriage is inherently difficult. We've learned the hard way how to temper our expectations, work on clear communication, and practicing gratitude when it'd be easier to complain and be selfish. We are far from perfect, but we serve a God who is, and it's He who empowers us to love and serve each other like Christ.

What is your family's mission?
It can be strange to think of your family having a mission, but another way to think of this question would be to consider the nonnegotiable values & principles that guide your family's decisions and trajectory.
In this episode, we look at the purpose of having a family mission statement, how to write one, and how it will enhance your relationships and unify your family as a whole.
This statement is a living document that will evolve over time as your values evolve, and you are able to include your children's input and values as they grow older.

How do I get my partner to pursue personal growth and success?
This question - or some variation of it - is asked by many individuals who are striving to excel in life. Whether it be elevating their health & fitness, reigning in their finances, investing in their relationships, advancing in their careers, etc... the temptation is to look at those close to us and wonder,
Why aren't they doing the same thing as me?
Don't they see how hard I'm working, and the results I'm getting?
And while these questions can be well-intentioned, they are far from helpful.
These questions breed comparison, and will only serve to build up our pride while alienating those we care about.
This is why we need to choose COMPASSION over comparison. Instead of wondering why our spouses, kids, friends and others aren't working as hard as we are, let's approach others with curiosity and appreciation for who they are and the areas in which they are excelling.
While it's OK to want to see the people in your life elevate along with you, it's crucial to model HUMILITY and lead by example. Actions speak louder than words.
Don't put unfair expectations on others for the growth you think they should be demonstrating in the time frame you think is best. Rather, practice empathy, being aware of the challenges they may be facing when it comes to their own growth. Be willing to ask good questions, while also affirming them in the areas you see them excelling.
In time, your consistent example and encouragement may be the catalyst that inspires them to take action and pursue their own growth!
