5 Ways to WIN the Winter

Wednesday Jan 17, 2024

Wednesday Jan 17, 2024

What is your relationship with winter - specifically with the cold?
If you live in a place that experiences winter in its fullest: cold, snow, darkness... it's easy to get bogged down with the "winter blues."
We can default to a hunker down mentality in which we become recluse and inactive during these frosty months - which doesn't help us in any respects to create Uncommon lives.
But what if we could reframe our relationship to the cold, and put the W-I-N in winter?!
In this episode, I unpack 5 ways for us to WIN the winter:
Embrace the cold
Avoid hunkering down by getting out of the house
Turn off the screen & stimulate your brain
Prioritize your health
Get up early
While not an exhaustive list of activities, by implementing 1 or more of these disciplines, you can not just survive - but THRIVE - separate yourself from the common masses, and WIN the winter! Your future self will thank you!

When was the last time you created something?
When we're young, we create in order to learn about the world and express ourselves. But as we get older, we tend to lose our creative curiosity and artistic expression. Our time and mental bandwidth are consumed by our jobs and responsibilities, and although we are surrounded by content and art, we succumb to the habit of passive consumption - instead of pursuing active creation.
In this episode I explore 6 benefits of choosing to create:
self-expression & personal growth
skill building & expertise
fostering innovation & critical thinking
contributing to culture & community
empowerment & agency
emotional catharsis & well-being
In our information age that bombards us with content, it's crucial to recognize the invaluable benefits of our contribution to the creative tapestry. Doing so will transcend mere productivity; it will become our vehicle for self-discovery, skill development, innovation, authentic community, resourcefulness and emotional well-being.
Choose what you will create, and determine why you want to create it, what personal growth you aspire to, and the impact you hope to leave on others.

What emotions surface? What questions or thoughts are you confronted by?
In this episode we explore people's fixation with longevity - extending their lives at all costs. While we promote our pillar of Holistic Health and encourage all people to aspire to live healthy lives, is the desire to live as long as possible and "cheat" death a God honoring pursuit?
Or should we be excited for death, knowing that our last breath in this life ushers us into eternity with our Creator?

5 Laws of Stratospheric Success

Wednesday Dec 06, 2023

Wednesday Dec 06, 2023

How do you view the relationship between giving and success?
For most people, giving is the result of success.
But what if the reality is that giving is the cause of success?
In this installment of Book Reports, Ryan unpacks the principles espoused in the best-selling book, The Go-Giver, by Bob Burg & John David Mann.
This book outlines 5 laws for stratospheric success:
The Law of Value - Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment
The Law of Compensation - Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them
The Law of Influence - Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first
The Law of Authenticity - the most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself
The Law of Receptivity - the key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving
Knowing and adopting these laws can open up endless possibility to be a blessing to others and find that as a result you come out majorly blessed!

How do you define adventure?
Is it traveling to far off exotic locations?
Is it high octane - even dangerous - physical activity?
Is it interacting with diverse peoples and cultures?
Perhaps it's a combination of each - or something else entirely...
Is adventure reserved solely for action movie stars, or real life explorers?
Do you believe that adventure is for YOU?
We believe that adventure is a crucial component of an Uncommon life! Adventure forces you out of your comfort zone, it reveals your inner grit and resilience, and can lead to personal growth, authentic relationships and lifelong memories!
In this episode I discuss the importance of prioritizing adventure with my guest Matt Kinch, founder of Adventuredesk - which provides adventures and group retreats that foster community, wellness and connection through amazing travel experiences.
We discuss the many different ways that Adventuredesk helps people to infuse their lives with adventure, from bucket list style challenges, wellness retreats, and cultural immersion. Ultimately, sprinkling in some adventure in your own life can be as simple as visiting a nearby location you've never been to before, and trying a new experience.
1 thing is for sure: the more you invite adventure into your life, the more you will want to live a life of adventure!

What can happen when you're willing to just show up?
When you're willing to leave behind your routine and responsibilities for a time, show up and be open to whatever God has in store for you, Uncommon things can happen!
In this episode, Phil & Ryan recount the events from their Elevate Experience in Decorah, IA. There, we and 5 other men spent time fly fishing in Iowa's beautiful Driftless region. We hiked picturesque bluffs. We enjoyed delicious meals and fantastic fellowship. We soaked in God's creation. Formed authentic friendships. And had time for a mental reset as we gained clarity around our values and vision for our lives as men.
You'll hear about the work that goes into curating a highly personalized leadership adventure retreat, including the work we do with our "informants." You'll learn about how we not only design FUNcommon activities that challenge and thrill our participants, but also the intentional work we do around personal growth to ensure that the experience pays dividends well beyond our weekend together.

How to be an Uncommon Leader

Wednesday Nov 15, 2023

Wednesday Nov 15, 2023

How do you define leadership?
What are the characteristics of a truly Uncommon leader?
Are leaders born, made, or a bit of both?
In this episode, Phillip & Ryan discuss these questions and more in their desire to portray what an Uncommon leaders should look and act like.
Qualities like humility, integrity, ownership, selflessness, empathy and a servant's heart - all of these comprise Uncommon leadership.
We look at how Jesus modeled leadership - and how his "upside down" approach contrasts with the all too common selfish, domineering, and outright oppressive leadership exercised in our world today.
Uncommon leaders are servants; and to be a servant, one must walk in humility and love towards those they lead.
We also talk about ways to invest in yourself and grow as a leader. Yes, while many individuals are born with innate abilities that lend themselves to leadership, leadership can also be developed over time through intentional effort. Like a muscle, when leadership is consistently exercised it will grow stronger. And if left dormant it will atrophy over time.
We also discuss the importance of personal brokenness in becoming qualified for leadership, as well as the importance of Uncommon Communion with God to sustain our leadership for His glory.
The fact is that everyone is a leader to some extent. Regardless of whether you have 1 million loyal followers, or zero people following you - leadership starts with self-leadership.
How are you leading yourself daily to grown and improve as a man or woman. How are you investing in your knowledge and skills? In what ways are you improving your health & fitness, your relationships, your stewardship, faith and overall life vision?
Don't strive to gain followers. Just strive to be the best version of your Uncommon self you can be, and you will attract others who want to benefit from your leadership!
