How do you define a servant leader?
Humility? Courage? Integrity? Encourager?
What does it look like to be a servant leader in your workplace? And what would be the results of answering this call?
On this edition of Thee Fraternity LIVE call, the men in our community answer these questions, as well as discuss some of the challenges to being a servant leader, and the blessings that outweigh these challenges.
One thing is for sure:
Being a servant leader is Uncommon.
Jesus was the ultimate servant leader. He demonstrated perfect grace, accountability, patience, righteous rebuke and LOVE. And he has tasked us with being servant leaders in our workplace, whether we're the CEO or intern. Doing so will allow others to see Christ in us and experience a taste of God's coming Kingdom.
The question is: Will we answer the call?

What are the masks we hide behind?
In his book, The Mask of Masculinity, author Lewis Howes highlights several of the masks men tend to hide behind, 1 of them being the Know-it-all mask, or the "tendency or need to fill the void with the sound of your own voice."
In this solo episode, Ryan reflects on the know-it-all mask, how it's manifested in his own life, the detriments of this mask, and the positive outcomes of shedding this mask and embracing his authentic self.
The pressures to wear this mask range from insecurities, fears, traumas, and pride.
What are the detriments to hiding behind the know-it-all mask?
living unauthentic lives
being called out & embarrassed by others
falling for inferior or false information
cheating ourselves out of new knowledge and success
experiencing and enjoying deep relationships
finding ourselves in dangerous or precarious situations... Just ask George Costanza about the time he pretended to be a marine biologist and found himself face to blowhole with a whale: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oHRucRyLCms
You can learn more about the Know-it-all mask and how to shed it by reading the book The Mask of Masculinity

Surprise!
When was the last time you experienced a truly amazing surprise? Was it a surprise party? A surprise gift? A surprising piece of news? When we were kids we marveled at the world around us, and we loved being surprised! But as we get older, it becomes more rare for us to enjoy surprises; and our tendency is to associate surprises with negativity, like an unexpected expense or surprise diagnosis.
We want to turn this norm on its head and create space in our lives for surprise! And it may surprise you to learn that there are numerous benefits of being surprised:
being surprised brings us pleasure
surprises enhance romantic relationships
surprise helps us learn
surprise intensifies our emotions, and improves our mental health
And if you want to experience an amazing weekend of surprise, check out Thee Uncommon Experiences and sign up today!

What is burnout and how do we avoid it?
On this call we discussed the importance & value of hard work, and the ever-present threat of burnout to knock us off course.
God has given us the mandate to create and cultivate, and to identity with Him in our work - and also in our rest. The 4th commandment - and the most descriptive - is to honor the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Just as God rested from His work of creation on the 7th day, He has called us - blessed us - with a day of rest from our work. Honoring the Sabbath is a true test of obedience and faith. And make no mistake: resting is for our own good, and can actually benefit and enhance the work we do.
Whatever rest looks like for you, our encouragement is to prioritize time in the Lord's presence. The temptation will always be to complete just 1 more task on our endless to-do lists. But if we will resist the urge to be a 'Martha' and surrender to God's call to be a 'Mary' and sit at the Lord's feet, we will discover the one thing that is better that productivity: contentment and peace in the presence of our God.

How are you doing?
It's a question we all ask. And it's a question we're asked, to which we reply with, Good, Fine, Busy, etc.
But how are you, really? When do you take time to honestly ponder your mental well being? What authentic relationship(s) do you have where you could safely share about your struggles, fears, anxieties, hopes, disappointments, pain, dreams?
In this episode, Phil and Ryan have a conversation with Ian Nelson-Johnson PSY.D., L.P. - and Thee Fraternity Founding Father to discuss mental health and the importance of authentic community.
Ian shares about how his core values inform his approach to caring for his own mental health, as well as his decision making and the way he relates to others. He also talks about his amazing wife & partner Christina, and the life they are designing together.
We also talk about his experience with Thee Uncommon, and the positive impact of engaging with other men who are striving to live healthy, purposeful lives.
When it comes to mental health, it's not about having all the answers. Rather, being willing to enter into hard conversations, leading out in vulnerability and authenticity to give permission to those around you to do the same. That is where healing can begin.

Is your comfort zone holding you back?
Is comfort good for us, or is it detrimental - and downright dangerous?
In this episode Phillip and Ryan unpack what comfort is, why it's so enticing, and how it creeps up in our lives? Certainly leisure and vices are not all inherently bad, but how do we enjoy those things without idolizing comfort?
It's likely we'd all agree that we experience more growth when challenged - as opposed to living comfortably - and yet so few of us consciously choose to do hard things.
Be challenged to examine yourself and consider where you're living too comfortably. Whether you need to turn off the TV, or go for a run, or talk to a stranger, commit today to step out of your comfort zone and step into your Uncommon!

Are you a person of your word?
What does that even mean - being a person of your word? Is it just keeping your promises? Is it being where you say you'll be, doing what you say you'll do, when you say you will?
Where do qualities like integrity, dependability, and trustworthiness intersect, and where are they different? How does knowing your core values empower you to be a person of your word?
In this episode, Phil and Ryan unpack what it means to them to be men of their word. They share candidly about their struggles, and discuss the practical ways they can grow as being men of their word. When it comes to this topic it's crucial to know your values so you can clearly determine what to say 'yes' to and what to say 'no' to. And when you say no, you are saying yes to something better.
