What is Family Discipleship?
We can define "discipleship" as making followers Jesus.
So a definition of family discipleship might be, creating intentional time built into the rhythms of the family’s life for the purpose of thinking about, talking about and living out the gospel.
As men - husbands and fathers - what is our role in family discipleship? Who's primarily responsible for discipling our kids?
Their pastor or youth group leader(s)?
Their teacher (if they attend a Christian school)
Their peer group?
Or, are we as fathers primarily responsible for discipling our kids? And if so, what does it look like for us to create a family discipleship plan? As always, we need to look to God's word for clarity and wisdom:
“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” Ephesians 6:4 NIV
“These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” Deuteronomy 6:6-9 NIV
Charles Spurgeon asked the question, “ How can we hope to see the kingdom of our Lord advance when his own disciples do not teach his gospel to their own sons and daughters?”
As fathers, we can be sure that we are leading our family spiritually. The question is: are we leading them towards Christ through righteous obedience, or away from Christ through disobedience and apathy?
Make no mistake: this is NOT an easy calling. But it is a worthwhile calling; and one we can perform faithfully by God's grace!
In this part 1 episode we talk about family discipleship, the challenges and merits, and tangible ways we can start to implement a plan to ensure consistency.

What does it mean to start with the end in mind?
We believe in the power of visualization: imagining and picturing your desired outcome as a means of achieving your greatest goals. And what better goal than to live a life of purpose and impact?
In this episode, Phil & Ryan discuss the power of writing your own eulogy, or the story that will be shared about you at your funeral. While funerals are somber occasions, this is not intended to be a morbid exercise; but rather an opportunity to reflect on the life you want to create, and the person you want to become.
It's a powerful question to consider: "What will my loved ones say about me when I'm gone?" What do I want them to say?" And what kind person do I want them to remember?
We share our own eulogies, and encourage you to step up to the plate and write your own eulogy.
You can download our PDF that walks you through writing your own eulogy here: file:///Users/Ryan/Downloads/write_your_eulogy_fillable%20(1).pdf

As husbands, what does it look like to lead our wives spiritually?
How do we rightly think about submission in our marriage? What does it practically look like for us to love and lead our wives "as Christ loved the church," and to practice servant leadership?
That's what we unpack on this community call. We look at some of the challenges we face as husbands to lead our wives in our faith, as well as practical action we can take to fulfill this calling.
No matter where you're at in this journey, know that God has equipped you with all the knowledge and ability to be obedient in this area. Even prioritizing consistent prayer with your wife can go a long way in creating spiritual unity and intimacy in your marriage.

Are you a lone wolf?
Are you a Top Dog?
What's the difference between the two? Are there good & bad qualities of both?
In this episode, Phil and Ryan reflect on the merits and pitfalls of lone wolf mentality, and discuss how you can maintain your sense of creativity and individuality within the context of a tribe or community.
As people striving to walk our own Uncommon path, we don't want to forsake the unique traits that make us who we are, but we also don't want to allow our sense of individuality to ostracize us from others and hinder our leadership.
Ultimately if you are a part of a community in which you are accountable and encouraged to grow as a person, your individuality can be celebrated as an asset that adds value to the whole.
And if you are searching for a community of men where you can build relationships, learn skills, achieve worthwhile goals, and have a ton of fun in the process, we would love for you to consider joining Thee Uncommon Fraternity! You can learn more at https://www.theeuncommon.com/

How important is passion in your work?
Is it reasonable for us to desire to do a job that aligns with our passions? Or should our priority be to just work hard and provide for our families? And are those mutually exclusive, or can we have both?
In this episode we discuss the relationship of passion to the work we do. Some seasons of our vocational lives align more with our passions, while other seasons find us struggling to feel fulfilled in our work. We may have to persevere in a work situation that poses many struggles. But how might God be growing you & preparing you for a future calling?
Several truths from God's word can provide us with healthy perspective on our work:
1 Tim 6:6 But godliness with contentment is great gain
Luke 16:10 Whoever can be trusted with little can be trusted with much; and whoever is dishonest with little will also be dishonest with much
Let us strive to work with contentment and gratitude, allowing God's Spirit to produce these virtues in us. And may we be prove ourselves faithful stewards of the work God has called us to today - and trust in His timing & perfect will to unfold in our work lives.
